Eric Boon From old factories to new semi-detached homes, property investment company NER-BREK has been going strong for over 60 years helping to refurbish and develop a wide variety of properties. We spoke to managing director Eric Boon to find out more.

This is Eric Boon ’s story…

  1. Why did you want to start your own business?

I have always worked for myself and got a flavour of being my own boss from a very early age. Ever since the age of 14 I was selling sea-coal from the beach and I enjoyed it a lot. I always knew I was going to have my own business.

  2. What was the deciding factor for you?

I wanted to be able to control my own destiny. As you can probably tell by how long this business has been running, I love working for myself and doing things that I believe are driving the business forward.

  3. How did you get the business off the ground?

Quite simply, a lot of patience and hard work. I learnt very quickly to never take no for an answer; this attitude has helped me grow the business into what it is today. I started with very little originally with only an overdraft from the bank.

  4. Best bits about working for yourself?

Sheer hard work and determination which I enjoy, I love getting my hands dirty and pulling everything together because that is the make up of my personality. Deciding what I want to do and when I want to do it has to be the best part in working for myself.

  5. What have been the biggest challenges so far?

My current project is becoming a real challenge as I am involved with developing the arcade on the high street in Redcar. I am currently spending £1 million on the property so it’s one of the biggest projects that I have undertaken.

  6. What would you have done differently if you could go back?

Nothing – I know it sounds a little cheesy but I do not have any regrets.

  7. How does it feel to be your own boss?

I’m comfortable with it. I would be lying if I said it wasn’t a little stressful at times but that is all part and parcel of being in such a senior position.

  8. A piece of advice for those thinking about starting up?

Be prepared to work hard. Only expect to get out of it what you put into it and never give up. You must also make sure that you do not overstretch yourself financially because you could find yourself in trouble pretty quickly..
