Gregory Sills

Gregory Sills Gregory Sills decided he wanted a lifestyle change to enable him spend more time with his children. As a result, Gregory started his own company to have more control over his work/life balance. Now three years into his managing role with his structural/civil engineering and architectural services company, Scurator Ltd, Gregory reflects back at how he has managed to keep afloat.

This is Gregory Sills’s story…

  1. Why did you want to start your own business?

It was predominantly for a lifestyle change, and to take control of my finances. It was something that that I had always wanted to do but had never taken the plunge and always plaid it safe. Once I plucked up the courage to take the first steps I was knew it was the right choice for me.

  2. What was the deciding factor for you?

I wanted a better work/life balance and of course the financial benefit. The desire for these things inspired me to work hard, set myself goals and achieve my dreams of a better life for my family.

  3. How did you get the business off the ground?

It was through sheer hard work and motivation; I drove myself to always achieve my targets and more, plus the help I received from the enterprise team.

  4. Best bits about working for yourself?

The work/life balance was what I wanted to get right when starting my own business, and now I get to see my kids growing up and I can control my own working hours.

  5. What have been the biggest challenges so far?

Growing the business and expanding the client base has always been a challenge that I have relished. I am always looking ahead and never turning back.

  6. What would you have done differently if you could go back?

I would have definitely started my own business at a much earlier time. I believe I had the skills to do it but not the confidence to go forward with them.

  7. How does it feel to be your own boss?

I like being in control and now I am in control of my own life. It feels really good!

  8. A piece of advice for those thinking about starting up?

I would have to say make sure you create a realistic plan and always set yourself targets. Aim to exceed all of your expectations and be determined to succeed..
