Nathan Robinson, 24, launched his Saltburn-based lettings agency in January 2008, with a little help from the enterprise team. Just a few months on, he’s going from strength to strength.
I wanted to make the decisions and be in charge of my own hours. I’m also a surfing fanatic and this gives me the opportunity to get out there if I feel I can spare the time.
Most of the businesses in Saltburn town centre are well established, so when a suitable unit became available, I just knew it was the right time. I started pulling a business plan together and we opened three months later.
I had the business model in mind and I used my experience from previous roles to decide what would work best in the local market. The enterprise team helped me make the final step by providing support for the shop front design, furnishings and supplies.
You do your job and it’s your own achievement, so if you help someone out it feels great. For example, if I secure a tenant for a client who has been struggling to rent out their property, its gives me a real buzz.
Getting known in the market place. There are five agents in Saltburn, so I’ve had to concentrate on getting the brand out there, building relationships with local businesses and potential customers.
Don’t waste money on advertising in places where you’ll not see the return. Either stick to what you know or research very carefully when a new opportunity comes along.
Some days you feel on top of the world, but after a slow week the stress mounts. In the end though, it’s up to you to turn it around.
Make sure you have a good business plan with achievable goals. Do your market research, know your competitors and, most importantly, know your target customers..
