Being self-taught has provided florist Tina Steimetz with the will to succeed in the face of adversity. It was this determination, together with some help from the Enterprise Team, that drove her so set up her own business. If you believe you’re good at what you do, it makes sense to do it for yourself. I taught myself all I know and I wanted to use those skills in a way that could bring me financial security.
I thought I was better than a lot of other people in the industry. That’s not being big-headed, but a little self-belief can go a long way when you’re setting up your own business. I also wanted to provide for my family.
I had done this type of work for six years on and off, so deciding the type of business was the easy bit. I contacted Pertemps and the advice they offered persuaded me to make the move. They also provided funding towards stock and I have since been in contact with the Enterprise Team, who have given me mentoring and advice.
It’s a huge confidence boost. Working for yourself and being responsible for your own financial stability is a great impetus to keep you going.
I want to have my own shop as I am currently trading from another premises; Henson’s Shop which is 12 West Terrace in Redcar, but my own property is what I aim for. That’s my biggest challenge and I’m not there yet, but every day of successful trading is another step forward in working towards it.
I would perhaps have gone to college, although being self-taught does have its advantages. A hands-on training style makes you really appreciate the skills that you’ve achieved, and if you’re doing something that interests you it’s a great learning curve.
It’s the best feeling in the world for me… Hard work, but good work. I’m pulling myself out of the poverty trap.
You need to look at your finances and learn as much as you can. Stick at it and don’t take no for an answer..
